Abstract:

Background: Celiac disease is a long-term immune disorder that primarily affects the small intestine due to a permanent sensitivity to gluten in genetically susceptible people .Iron deficiency anemia is the most widely experienced in humans .Iron deficiency anemia additionally is a common extra intestinal manifestation of celiac disease. Aim: Todetermine the prevalence of celiac disease in patients with iron deficiency anemia. Method: in this case series study 533 patients with diagnosis of iron deficiency anemia of obscure origin were included in the study, all patients were subjected to full history of gastrointestinal symptoms of celiac disease, complete blood picture, serum iron, serum ferritin, patients were also screened by serological tests include anti-gliadin and anti-endomysial antibodies, upper gastrointestinal endoscopy was done and a histologic finding for celiac disease were investigated in biopsy specimen taken from the second part of duodenum, the diagnosis was confirmed by both histopathological and serological tests.
